In Memoriam: John E. Swain

Remembering a Founding Partner

The Swain Law Firm emembers John E. Swain for his long career in law, his commitment to clients, and his service to the Houston community. John graduated from Stephen F. Austin in 1958 and later attended Baylor University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1962 and a Master of Laws in 1964. He returned to Houston and began practicing law alongside his longtime friend and mentor, Carl T. Denson, Jr., whose practice focused heavily on probate and estate administration.

As the practice grew, it later became known as Denson, Tillman & Pribilski. In 1979, John became an equal shareholder and named partner of Denson and Swain, Attorneys, P.C. The firm practiced in Houston for many years and eventually became Swain Law Firm after S. Tyler Swain joined the practice in 1998.

Community and Professional Service

In addition to his legal practice, John served in business and community leadership roles. He was Chairman of the Board of First Northwestern Bank and remained active in community organizations and his church.

His service included work as a Deacon at Garden Oaks Baptist Church, participation in the Union Baptist Foundation, and service as President of the Optimist Club of Houston.

Family and Legacy

John was also deeply devoted to his family. He is remembered by his wife, Ledra Swain, his sons, John and Tyler, his grandchildren, extended family, friends, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched.

The Swain Law Firm continues to honor his memory through a commitment to professionalism, service, and thoughtful legal counsel.
